I have been using Internet Explorer as my main browser for a long time and
I've never had any trouble saving image files in the format they are on the
web. I always just right click and choose the "save as" feature, and the
first thing it shows is the form that the image is already.... ie jpg, gif,
etc, and also gives me options to choose another format. I generally just
save it in the form that is given, and if I want to change it for some
reason, I use PSP or PS to do that.

I do notice that a lot of files that are attached to my Outlook Express are
bit map, however. But I also get jpg and gif there as well. So I guess it
depends on what format the person is sending to me.
