Just a comment, all the programs mentioned here are great.  I'd really
recommend giving the more expensive ones like Photoshop a test run.  I know
that sites like Softseek, and Adobe and Macromedia themselves, give free
trials of the software, often 30 days.  Photoshop I believe does not have a
time limit, but you cannot save any graphics you create in it nor copy and
paste from it, you can only test its features and see if you like it before
buying.  I'd recommend taking the free downloads one or two at a time and
making the most out of them for 30 days or until you decide that you do or
don't like the features and how they compare to each other.  Don't count out
some corel products either.  I do use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, but I
also have  Corel Photopaint and Draw and find some very nice features in
them as well.
