Assuming you have created your image on a plain colored background, try
selecting the area of the image you *DON'T* want to copy using

Select->Color range

and adjust the 'fuzziness'

Then go to

Select->Modify->Expand and enter the number of pixels you want in order to
prevent the halo.

The Select->Inverse and cut and paste as normal.
