In PSP4 all you have to do to make a transparent gif is to:

Choose "save as" and choose Sub Type Version 89a-Interlaced.
Then click Options which will bring up a File Preference box and click on
the GIF tab.  Set to "Set the transparency value to the background color".

Once you set the GIF preference to GIF 89a-transparency, that will be what
the default is whenever you save a GIF file from then on.  Remember to
change this option whenever you want to save a different type of GIF.

If you are using PSP5, set your background color, then reduce the color in
the graphic to (256 colors/Decrease color depth).  Then choose Colors/Set
Palette Transparency.  If this option isn't available (greyed out), you have
not reduced your colors to 256.

Then click on box that says "Set Transparency Value to Background Color".
Click OK.
Choose File/Save a Copy As and choose gif as the file type...and Save.
