It looks as if some of you didn't see my original post in this thread.
Accepting that the "background" attribute in a "table", "tr" or "td" tag is
non-valid HTML, it's possible to get it to work in NN as follows:
Create a "container", single cell table, with the background attribute in
the TD tag. Place your content in one or more tables nested inside this
single cell, with BACKGROUND="" in the TABLE tag for each one. That stops
the nested table from "inheriting" the background image from the container
table, but allows the container table background image to show through.
