I agree with Jim. Just because people can use places like Geocities to put
up simple homepages, doesn't make them web designers. (God bless Geocities
for getting me started though.... I wouldn't have learned to write tags by
hand unless I started in their Advanced Editor.)

I realize that the web is getting very BIG and there are places now that
offer business their own "stores" in their online malls, etc., but for a
company to work with a professional who can help them design their layout,
help them design how many pages they need on their site and which pictures
to use, what they want to project as a company, etc.... is a far different
thing. Are these online services going to allow their clients to send them
pictures, logos, etc. for scanning and placement? I don't know any online
malls or ISPs that will offer this kind of service, and if they do... it
will probably cost just as much or more than a web professional.

Does anyone on this list have any knowledge of what service an online mall
offers to their "stores" and the pricing for such a service? I personally
would like to know this, as it does effect the future of our business to a
certain degree.

Anyway, I don't think the future of web designers/consultants is dead just
yet.... as more and more people embrace this line of work, the professionals
will just keep learning more and more and have larger learning curves, thus
having more to offer their clients. Besides... even with the friendliest
web publishing software, there still has to be the knowledge in place about
how to design and lay it out. I don't think web design as a career will go
by the wayside any time soon.
