I have. A few months ago I set up a side by side test. Scores of people
responded. Bottom line: a single image loaded faster overall by about 6 to
4.
Now, there are those that *swore* those numbers were wrong because that was
not their experience. I can't explain why some people always see it a
certain way and others don't.
As for interlaced GIF's giving the *illusion* of loading faster, well,
that's totally subjective as well.
I'm content to cut a graphic up when I need to render a complex image that
needs parts to be a GIF and parts to be a JPEG. But other than that, I'll
stick to a single image.
