making pictures look better

hi everyone. i have been on this list for very short time so please excuse
me if this topic has already been discussed.

i wonder if there is any way (any manuals, how-tos) to create some graphic
look better. say i have my company logo and it is pretty simple - 2 colors -
red and blue. what if i want to make it look better - there are very cool
effects on some logos, and stuff so i wonder if anyone has seen a how-to or
anything on this.

and another question, could anyone suggest me some way to create 3d looking
text in photoshop?
