I assume you're talking about making art from words (as at 
http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/things/340a.html) ???  If so, then it's done 
with a simple script - there's many available(for PHP ones search 
http://www.zend.com/codex.php), and even some Win32 programs to do it - don't 
ask me for the links though!
