quickly down loading page graphics.

Hi, I'm wondering what kinds of things can be done in order to speed 
up.. or give the apperence of such, of the down load time of graphics on 
a page.
I have seen several things done, these include:
An image that seems to fade in;
and an image that loaded a rough black and white version frist then 
added the colour and clarity later on. 

How might these things be accomplished and what other options are there 
out there to give the apperence of quick down load time.
