Hi there-

Everything other people have said is right on: offering
different sizes, the format should be .bmp (for windows),
or MacPict (for mac, i believe).

I would like to add a few things. First, when people click
on a link to this image it is just going to ask them where
they want to save it. You will want to give them
instructions on where to save it, and how to change the
setting on their computer (contact me if you need
instructions). Also, you will have to have a thumbnail in
.gif or.jpg format on your web page.

Finally, you have two options for backgrounds. you can
have a fullsize image that is centered on the background.
you could provide these in 640x480, 800x600, 1024x764,
etc. keep in mind that bitmaps like .bmp are not
compressed, and get very large (1MB+) for the larger
resolutions.

The other option is a tiling background. these repeat
across the whole desktop, over and over. like most web
page backgrounds. you can make these tile seamlessly by
offsetting an image in Photoshop or something similar. or
you can make wild backgrounds using a program like Sausage
softwares Reptiler (http://www.sausage.com/reptile/) or
Terralogic Texture Maker
(http://www.s-direktnet.de/HomePages/tobias_reichert/)

both are freeware, and very addictive. they work by very
different methods, take some time to try both if you are
interested.

Luke
