IANAL. It was my understanding that, unless a contract
between the artist and the employer states differently,
work for hire is the property of the person who pays for it.

This is why web design contracts typically must
specifically state that the web designer can use the site
for promotion. This is in contrast to you designing an
image and then someone asking to buy it, where you would
normally retain the copyright unless you specifically sold
that too.

Again, I am not sure on this and await someone more
knowledgable to get it right. But I will bet that no
matter what the case is, you could/should have a contract
which spells these things out.

P.S. If i'm wrong, could someone explain the work for hire
bit to me? what does it mean if not this?
