BG Image Problem on IE5

I wonder if anyone has problem displaying background images on 
Internet Explorer 5.0.  I creates a simple GIF background image and 
it displays okay on NS but experiencing very slow screen update on 
IE5.  The only thing I could think of is that this image is a 
transparent GIF.  Am I not supposed to use transparent background 
images?  It doesn't seem to bother NS.
