When Graphic/Web Designer Certification is implemented
in the US the way it is being implemented in other
parts of the world -- youll find out how valuable
classes and design training really is. I've worked
alongside many a "designer" who got their foot in the
door without tradition art education. More power to
you -- but I still maintain that there is knowledge
and an
evalution process that can only effictively take place
in a structured environment with trained
professionals.
No offense, I am not taking shots here -- but Ive
worked in many corporations where clients were
clueless about what they were lacking in many
self-styled designers until someone with the education
and training walked in the door. By the same token --
ive seen some things from the art school contingent
that are just as frightening.
Books are tools -- but they are no substitute for
traditional education. Sure I have Graphics Tips and
Tricks links -- but thats all they are -- tips and
tricks mostly about software and production. Software
doesnt make a designer -- it too is a tool. And thats
the biggest challenge we face -- software and
technology overshadowing design theory and practice. I
have a great library of books -- anyone in this
business needs to have reference material. But
designers are more than the books that they read -- or
should be anyway.
