First, I'd like to say thanks to the numerous people who responded. I
learned a lot.
Second, I'd like to say that I have tested that particular color (#fffff1)
with a 256 color setting. It was a PowerMac 6100/66 (let's hold down the
laughter please), running MSIE 3. That particular system did NOT dither
the background. It merely rendered it in the closest approximation that it
knew.
Some of you have said that some systems will "dither" non browser-safe
BGCOLORs. I have seen gifs and jpegs dithered, but I have never seen a
BGCOLOR dithered (and I've worked with several low-end machines).
I guess what I'm asking is: do you really mean "dither", or do you mean
that it will default to the nearest approximation? This would change my
perception of the "safety" of using such a color.
Please forgive my persistence.
Thanks,
--Steve
