I was really amazed at the variety of responses here. I hope a lot of
people learned how to use the smooth modifier - I can't imagine doing
anything without it. As for smoothing the corners, just border your
selection with a width of 4 or so, then do a gaussian blur and levels, as
was mentioned earlier. BTW, another fun way to do curvy organic shapes in
Photoshop is to use the path tool. It's that little pen-like thing, and
it's quite handy.
