How to share PS and Illus files?

I'm new to using Illustrator.  What format  to save them in to be read by
PS,   and what do I need to be aware of in doing so?  I tried understanding
things at Adobe's site, but frankly it made me more confused.

I heard about Streamline, but is that necessary?  I have PS 4.0 and ILlus.
