if you're using photoshop 4, i don't understand what the problem is... you
just copy the layer that you want to change (or layers) and modify that
image... duplicate and flatten, bam!

for text, i usually have a saved selection, or several different layers, so
that i have the original text unmodified.  the other way, if you're just
changing the colour, load your selection, and do your change in variations.

For the most part, this is basic Photoshop / image editing technique...take
a look at your manual for details.
