Albert,
I love my E6. It's easy to use and seems reliable and fairly high quality
for the price. (I only use it occasionally.) I prefer their twain interface
to HP's, but I'm a big fan of Agfa's interface.
I have used HPs extensively (literally thousands of scans) in production
environments (esp. 4Cs) and found them to be bullet-proof and easy to use.
I've never been a fan of Umax scanners. Used one extensively at one job and
hated it -- not an Astra model. I really disliked their interface. And
found the scanner to be sub-par.
The bottom line for me is that I prefer Agfa and trust HP, but I bought the
E6 for my own home use based on its value. And I'm not unhappy with that
decision.
One caveat: I don't use OCR. Sorry.
good luck, tad
