PC - MAC e-mail

I was working on a graphic for a friend that uses a MAC.  I exported a file
to Adobe Illustrator and e-mailed it to him.

He said it came through as a text file and was unable to do anything with it.

As I am unfamiliar with the MAC, is there some other way I can e-mail him
an Adobe Illustrator file?  I realize the the AI file really is text but
should it show up in his e-mail as part of the meassage?  Can he perhaps
copy and past the AI part and save it as a seperate file?  Is there a
setting in his e-mail that he should change?
