Hello Terry,
I develop VRML, Animated GIFs and AVIs for the web using Kinetix 3D Studio
MAX... to answer your question, yes, it is possible. First off make sure
your render preferences are setup to "save as" or "save as file" (some
older versions may be "save to file")... from there you can select JPGs,
AVIs (as long as it's a animation) FLIs etc... GIFs, however, are only a
option in 3DSMAX versions 1.0 and lower... GIF is a format developed by
CompuServe and Autodesk/Kinetix lost the rights to using the format for the
versions after 1.0 ..thus, if you have 1.1, 1.2 or even 2.0 you will not
have the option to Save As GIF (unless they got the rights back in v2.0
which I don't have yet).

Anyway, you can still make animated GIFs or AVIs (note that animated GIFs
appear with more color options since they don't use the same color palate
for each frame, where AVIs use the same for each and every frame [making it
look like 16colors or 256colors instead of realistic 24bit or 32bit color
etc]). To do this all you need to do is to save as JPG for example (make
your image size is EXACT to save time) and then open some raster program
like Photoshop... covert the images to GIF... then use MS Gifanimator or
similar GIF animation program to import the images. This is a slower
process but it works for me when I have MAX 1.2+ installed because it gives
me more control frame-by-frame as opposed to exporting from MAX right to
GIF animator etc... however, I tend to have a copy of MAX 1.0 installed
on one of my systems to be able to do quick-renders for clients that need
examples.

Also, a couple of notes about MAX animations compared to web animations,
max will run the images smooth... don't even count on that on the web...
what will happen is that the web will load each frame (slowly) and then
kick into NITRO with the cached files... it basically looks like you hit
Fast Forward.. What I do to make the web play the anim smooth is ...1)
make the image size SMALL... 2) make the animation longer (more frames) so
it runs VERY slow in MAX... 3) minimize on colors used... 4) only use this
technique for looped anims... anims that are not looped.. it's better to
have fewer frames..etc.. Those are my 2 cents worth.. hope they help.
