JPG Problems

To make a long story short I've been asked to help an existing client fix a 
problem with another of her sites. Her site was "accidentally" deleted by her 
former hosting company--another long story.

She didn't have her site backed up. Fortunately, she was able to get the 
files for the initial site from the company that designed it in 1996. The 
company graciously sent the files to me for uploading.

But, all the jpg's (about 160 of them) are a mess. I've tried everything I 
can think of to fix them, but my limited brainpower with this problem is 
exhausted. If anyone can tell me what's wrong with the files and if they can 
be fixed without starting over from scratch, I can stop pulling my hair out. 
All advice is welcome and appreciated.
