Try changing the images to RGB mode and mask the background.
This statement will open new issues, but I think it will work best.
I agree with Luke, "I would suggest everyone learn
to really use in Photoshop, they would be the Path tool,
Layers and Layer modes, and Masks/Alpha channels."
Working on a RGB Photoshop file (IMHO) just solves a lot of problems/questions
I've seen come here on the list. After I'm done working on the "source" file
then I will make an output file,.jpeg,.gif,.png.
NOTE: I still have my "source" file available to make changes to.
I hope this helps,(even with questions about masking)
