Paperport is awful, yes. It originally comes with Picturesomething, but
Deskscan is usable, far better and downloadable for free from HPs web site.
I immediately upgraded for nothing to that, and it has worked wondefully.
Far more flexibility, more options to choose from than the original
package. New 98 version is out for a small price, around $25.

Scrap the original package and download one of the Deskscan packages for
your HP scanner.
