I vaguely remember something about this, I'm not sure if it addresses this
exact problem but Adobe does (did) have an upgrade from 5 to 5.02 and it
did mention something about fixing or at least improving the kern.

If you can't find it on their site let me know, I made sure to keep a backup
of the install files.

But it should still be at Adobe and it was free.
