l generally use PaintShop 4 for most things. I also have Simply3D, Microsoft
gif animator, MSImage compser , Snappy ( and to some degree MSFrontPage) to
work with images.  Photoshop must be very popular because it's never on the
store shelves and most resume's seem to require it. I've never used it but I'm
interested. 
Give Paintshop4 a try. There are more tools, of the photo retouching variety,
and more control over the image in lots of ways. 
Your default image program is probably set on Paintshop. You could probably
change it to Photoshop through "file types" in My Computer / options. 
You might have an earlier version of the photoshop because the scanner was an
earlier version. Just a guess.
