Just talked with my bf, who put my computer system together, and he
mentioned a few things to keep in mind.
What Paul Wilson said in whole we agree with. I almost have the system he
outlined, but mine is an Athlon 550, on the appropriate Asus board. There
were just a few things to keep in mind, otherwise.
More ram the better. I have 256megs, and am cruising fine with the web
design. Ram will make a slower processor seem like a faster one. If you
were using the programs for print use, you might need more memory. But I
rarely create files greater than a few megs when web designing. Print files
tend to larger sizes, like 40-100 megs (and I have heard of larger.)
I also run Windows 2000, which I think is better than Win98, but I will
admit to a few glitches here and there, including having to give up my
laser printer (which I got when using Windows 3.1.) Stay away from
WindowsME. I have heard more problems with that OS than any other (and I
used to sell software).
My bf mentioned that if you are so inclined, you can run a Windows or
Apache server on your machine, if you have at least 256 megs ram and Win2k.
This may be helpful to some people who prefer to work on websites, without
having to upload to the Internet to test. This might be more than you are
wanting to do.
And while we are on a good computer, try to invest in a good monitor as
well. No sense having a system with a good video card, when your monitor
can't show you how good it looks. It doesn't have to be big, I use a 17"
myself, and it doesn't have to be top of the line, but it should give you
better resolution than a typical monitor that comes with most computer
packages. I know, I used to sell computer packages at a national office
supply store. Look around for recommendations on a monitor in the size and
price range you are interested in.
And good luck with all this. It may seem overwhelming, but a good system is
worth it.
