Hi Susan

I am not an expert on print graphics, but I have done some in that area.

What I remember is that you need to know what the lines per inch (lpi) 
printing that a Printers service does for your cover art, and scan based on 
that by some simple math equation (Photoshop Bible covered it, but my copy 
is at home). I think it was 1.5x to 2x the lpi for scanning at dpi, but I 
am not positive. So if your lpi is 80, than you scan at around double it in 
pixels, like 160dpi.]

This will make for some large scans at 11x17. 1760x2720. For such a large 
image (presuming it covers the whole size), you might want to drum scan it 
(a bit more expensive). Or maybe not use the whole size with the photo. 
Depends on many factors I would say.
