Skewing

Hi;
In an earlier version of Illustrator I was able to skew the left-hand side 
of a graphic without affecting the right-hand side, making it larger and 
thus giving the appearance of angle and depth. Much to my surprise (and 
chagrin) that no longer appears possible, in either Illustrator 10 or 
FreeHand 10! Am I missing something (I hope)?
