Gradient

Hi;
I have both PS7.0 and FW4.0 (but prefer the latter). I would like to create 
a gradient that flows along a curve. I've tried (in FW) to create a 
gradient with the rectangle tool, convert the rectangle into a set of 
points, add points with the pen tool and move them around. The problem is 
the gradient doesn't move with the curve: the gradient alters as if the 
path were cutting out part of a larger rectangular gradient. I want the 
gradient to move like a snake. How can I accomplish this?
