Brian,

  In PS 4, click on the rectangular masking tool in your toolbar (the
perforated rectangle icon).  Draw the rectangle as you see fit, right click
and slect "inverse". Right click (or go to it in yout toolbar) "feather" and
set your feathering option for, say 15.  (You will have to play with the
actual numbers depending on what you want.)  Make sure that the background
color that is set is the background color that you want, and then click on
"cut".  This will give a soft edged, rounded angles rectangle shape, much like
the one at http://www.noblesys.com/Intranet/tristarbldg1.JPG.  You can change
the degree of rounding and the softness of the edge by experimenting with the
feather number.
