Believe it or not, Home decoration magazines are an excellent way to get an
eye for web page design. 
Generally homes are designed to have an attractive entrance, each room of the
house run on similar color schemes and themes, but with changes in texture and
feel for each room.  These magazines talk alot about texture, colors, design
and navigation.
Also commercial advertisement - full magazine ads, billboards can teach you
how to be "succint" with graphics. Say what you need to say with as few
graphics as possible.  What catches the eye (besides blinking and rotating!)
and what can be subtle. 
A book can teach you the "technical" aspects of design, but you have to use
your eyes to look around and study it ... "look at the feel of things".
