printing of graphics

Can someone explain to me why when you print web pages sometimes the
graphic doesn't show up.  I realize backgrounds don't print in Netscape,
but how about a graphic, where the printer just puts an X and a box around
the graphic.  Why don't images print sometimes off a website?
