Hi Chris,
Well, I'm still not sure on the question/problem, but I think that is because
I never have that problem.
If you might want to edit a layer in the future don't merge it. Leave it
intact.
I work on an original or source file and from that I will produce an output
file to be used. But the source file remains intact.
