Re: PDF file and saving grayscale images...

Paul,
I'm on a crash course to learn acrobat (beyond the magic of pdfwriter), so
your question has sent me to my books, and adobe support.  Are you writing
the files directly from pagemaker,  or are you using distiller? In
distiller, under advanced options, there is a 'convert CMYK images to RGB
color' option which is the default so  it needs to be deselected.

If you're not using distiller, I've found a reference to a  problem with
Word and the windows 3.1 postscript driver. Evidently,  if you are making a
pdf from Word with a color printer, every image ends up placed into the pdf
as colored image, even if its a grayscale. (Adobe Web Design and Publishing
Unleashed - sams.net, 1997, p.366 - however, not much hope here, just a
description of the problem). May be another printer?

If it isnt the printer, the only other thing that comes to mind is whether
the photoshop file is placed or parsed in pagemaker-- could this make a
difference? might be worth a try.

HTH - a little, at least. I didnt find any mention of this in the adobe
support databases, but you might want to try one of their acrobat forums
(some one with more knowledge may have the answer)
