You didn't say whether you're work is traditional graphics or digital
graphics. Traditionally (i.e., in the pre-digital age), portfolios
consisted of mounted work (drawings, sketches, illustrations, etc.).
Now that more work is being done for the Web, and the Web is a
readily available communications media, some people create an online
portfolio.

You could also use a combination, with some printed works and some
works online.

For printed works, the traditional way is to have each work mounted.
An alternative, though, would be to create a notebook of your work.
Check in an art store for the notebooks that consist of letter-size
acetate sheet holders. One brand name is ITOYA-PROFOLIO
Presentation/Display Book. They're available in various sizes: e.g.
15 pages, 36 pages, 60 pages, etc.. IMO, they're suitable for inkjet
printouts of digital graphics.

Regardless of the specific means you use to display your work, it
should have a professional appearance. That means neat, organized,
and consistent. You don't want loose scraps of paper floating around,
or some items labeled one way, and others labeled another. Also, if
you're printing your work, and using your own printer, be sure to use
high quality paper. If your printer isn't capable of high quality
output, pay to have it professionally printed. In the professional
world, there are many printers that far exceed the quality of typical
desktop printers.

Sessions.edu offers online courses, including courses in preparing a
portfolio. Check out:

I haven't taken any of their courses. Maybe someone reading this has
and can provide more information.
