Two designer tricks from before there were computers.... ;-)
-- Shiny surfaces reflect their environment. You don't need a mirror-like
reflection, but even just some soft general reflection suggesting the
surroundings can help. (ground and sky? lamp and tablecloth? etc)
-- A tiny drop of white gouache was used for highlights... with computers,
try airbrushing in a small star-like cross in white at the corner where the
object would catch light. Subtle, but it's a magic convincer.
