The manual helps... other resources buttress this.

For "How do buttons work?" they can have up to four different graphics, for
determining the rollover art, the hit area, etc. Inserting a keyframe in a
timeline is a prerequisite to actually changing things on just that frame,
true.

Not sure if I'm close to the question behind the description...?
