Well, you could , but you may start out with an asymetrical shape (text
outlines, for example). Rotating the shape could look different than
rotating the fill in that case.

As Shay points out, the gradients in Fireworks are quite powerful... you
can change them at any time. If you use the Paintbucket Tool on a vector
shape then little turn-handles appear so that you can rotate or scale the
fill. There are many, many different gradients revealed by this combination
of controls.

The radial and linear choices in the Fill menu let you choose the basic
type of gradient. You can choose bursts or fractal patterns or other types
of gradients too. At any later date you can select the shape again and
choose "Edit Gradient" from the Fill submenu. There are no pixels to erase,
no antialiasing to correct, no alpha channels required... just change
whatever you want, when you want.

Summary: Check into the Paintbucket Tool for controlling gradient angle and
frequency... it offers surprising new abilities in this type of work.
