Notes on the thread:

-- For browsers, you're best served with JPEG or GIF. While other graphic
file formats may display in your own authoring browser, only JPEG and GIF
have the predictable rendering across browser brands, version, and
platforms.

-- Everything you could want to know about PNG, and more, is at The PNG
Home Page, http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/ . (I'd especially recommend the
info on "browser support" there.)

-- Good rule of thumb for choosing JPEG or GIF: If it came from the
realworld then use JPEG, but if was drawn on a computer then use GIF.
(There are exceptions, and it's good to test both formats for a given
image, but this is a reasonable heuristic.)

-- Exporting JPEG from Photoshop? It will likely be significantly larger
than from other applications... Adobe documents ways to remove the JPEG
preview and other extraneous information.

-- Which tools compress best? Continuing third-party benchmarks are at:

(Sidenote: The fully-functional 30-day trial version of Fireworks 2.0 is
not yet available on the Macromedia website, but it should be up very soon
now.)
