The modem speed itself doesn't tell you the actual connection speed.
For example, I have a 56K modem, but the fastest speed I can get it
26.4, due to the quality of my phone connection. Also, those
connecting through AOL may get significantly slower throughput.
You may already have looked at this: the image quality difference
between an uncompressed image and a JPEG with a certain amount of
compression may be negligible. You probably will find that you can
substantially reduce image size, and the loss in quality is not
noticeable ... up to a point.
