SCIENCE/TECHNICAL WRITER
The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC),
http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu , of the Cooperative Institute for
Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado
in Boulder, serves as a national information and referral center in
support of glaciological research. Our mission is to make fundamental
contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing data and
disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the Earth
system.

Job Summary
Responsible for writing geoscience (cryospheric and polar) data set
documentation and user's manuals for remotely sensed and in-situ data.
Qualified individual is required to understand technical and scientific
concepts about the data sets. Researches and writes occasional features
on geophysical sciences for general audiences. Produces print and
on-line documents. The position reports to the Operations Manager.

Basic Functions
1. Research and work with team to understand technical and scientific
aspects of remotely sensed and in-situ geosciences data to develop data
set documentation and user's manuals.
2. Write, compile, and edit summary and HTML documentation for a broad
array of cryospheric data sets and topics.
3. Research and write feature articles on scientific applications of
geosciences data.
4. Write summaries and promotional pieces for general audiences on the
research and data of NSIDC.
5. Edit technical proposals, scientific documents, and other works
produced by NSIDC.
6. Represent documentation issues on various NSIDC product teams.
7. Act as a liaison to the NASA Guide Authors Group and Global Change
Master Directory.
8. Produce other documents, publications, and graphics as needed.

Requirements
- Must be eligible to work in the US. No visa sponsorship is available
for this position.
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, geosciences, technical writing, or a
related field, or equivalent
- Good understanding of geoscience topics
- Strong writing and composition experience especially scientific
writing for varied audiences
- Familiarity with Chicago and AP style guides
- Ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Enthusiasm and "go-for-it" attitude
- Relevant clips (work samples)

Desirable Skills
- Composition in HTML and general World Wide Web based publishing
- Basic familiarity with UNIX operating system
- Knowledge and experience in geoscience, especially polar regions and
remote sensing
- Familiarity with a range of graphics and desktop publishing software,
such as PageMaker, Quark Express, Photoshop, Corel Draw, etc.
No interviewing or relocation reimbursement is available for this
position. The position will be filled as an Associate Scientist of
appropriate level within CIRES and as a Professional Research Assistant
at the University of Colorado at Boulder and will be eligible for
employee benefits, including 22 days of vacation per year, healthcare
