Position:  Archival Consultant

The American Association for State and Local History is seeking an
individual to serve as the archival consultant for a grant-funded two year
project.   The purpose of the project is to provide practical continuing
education for individuals in museums, libraries, historical societies, and
other related organizations that are responsible for archival and manuscript
materials.  Specifically, the project will create both an online and an
onsite basic course.   The project will involve work with an archival
consultant, a web development consultant, and a project team composed of
staff from the Ohio Historical Society, the New York State Archives, and the
Michigan Historical Center.

The archival consultant will develop the archival content and curriculum and
will collaborate with the project=E2=80=99s adult education consultant and=
 web
development consultant to design and select appropriate materials and
activities to instruct non-traditional students in management of historical
materials.

Responsibilities include:
=B7 Working in collaboration with the project team to identify core archival
curriculum elements;
=B7 Developing goals and objectives appropriate for the core curriculum
elements;
=B7 Working in collaboration with the project=E2=80=99s adult education=
 consultant to
identify appropriate example materials to support the needs of adult
learners;
=B7 Working in collaboration with the project=E2=80=99s adult education=
 consultant to
create learning activities and exercises to support the core curriculum
elements;
=B7 Working with the web development consultant and adult education=
 consultant
to create an online tutorial using the core curriculum elements;
=B7 Participates in the initial presentation of the onsite workshops and
delivery of the online course;
=B7 Assisting in the creation of evaluation criteria, assessing the
evaluations, and making recommendations on revisions to the curriculum.

Qualifications:
=B7 Graduate degree in history or library science including formal archival
training;
=B7  10 years of professional archival experience with demonstrated=
 commitment
to and experience with archival continuing education initiatives including:
workshops, surveys, presentations, creation of lesson plans, and outreach
activities to non-professional archivists;
=B7 Knowledge of archival practices and the archival community;
=B7 Excellent writing and public speaking skills;
=B7 Detailed knowledge of surveys, evaluations, and assesments
=B7 Prefer knowledge of interactive instructional technology
=B7 Prefer some knowledge of adult educational theory and practice;
=B7 Prefer some knowledge of and experience working with interactive
instructional technology including distance learning via websites.
=B7 Ability to travel to project meetings.

Work location:  Consultant may work at location of his/her choice if regular
contact is maintained with project directors.


Time commitment and compensation:
Two year project, January 1, 2002-December 31, 2003.   $350 per day for 52
days ($18,200 total over two years).
