I'm not sure there is a way to do that even if you use platform specific
code on the client side, but what you could do is have a server side app,
and interface with it using JS.

So say you have a Perl / PHP / ASP etc. script to fetch data / any other
operation with the DB, and you get results from it using DataBinding on IE.

Since you said intranet, it is a feasible soln. Otherwise I'd say go for a
frame based system where the frame reloads with the current data.

A Java applet or Delphi app can offer a more robust interface, and allow the
developer to enforce sophisticated checks and afford scalability in case you
want to do more with the UI in the future.
