what's with XML?

I'm just starting to try and learn xml now. Is it a replacement for html? If
so how come when I view xml in a browser it just shows the xml source. for
example I type something like <?xml
version="1.0"?><name><first>Joe</first><last>Smith</last></name> and view it
in the browser and it shows the source without the <?xml ... part. If it's
too difficult to explain I'd appreciate some resources. I have the wrox
beggining xml book, but it really doesn't help much.
