if (isset(X)) problem -solved

Thanks folks for all suggestions.
I've finally solved the problem - which was that (isset(X)) was never true. I 
have rewritten the module and now it works as intended. I'll have to compare 
the before and after to see whatever happened in between. Weird.

As to the somewhat strange code some of you have noticed it is because this 
is a GPL PHP-project which I am adopting to better suit our needs. If I ever 
get to manage the project myself I'll rewrite more of the original stuff in 
there. And I really need to get the hang of PHP first. Thankfully my basic 
SQL knowledge is apparently sufficient for this project.
