backspace key disable as back button in IE

I have a script that dynamically edits SELECT menus. The only real problem 
is that when I'm trying to capture keypress events in IE, the BACKSPACE key 
acts like a back button and doesn't seem to be captured at all. Does anyone 
know why this is or a way around it?
