A lot of people who've responded sound more advanced
than I but I can't resist adding my $.02 anyway

I came to cgi programming with no programming
background -- it's a sideline for me, not my "real"
job. I learned Perl because it seemed to be the
dominant cgi language back in 1996 (and of course I
still have a world of Perl yet to learn).

I've only recently started investigating PHP. Despite
my strong sentimental pro-Perl bias, it seems PHP
makes a lot of sense as a first choice for Web
programming. I can't help but notice that for so many
things where Perl requires you to load a module or
open a pipe to do something, PHP has a built in
function there already. Database access? Send mail?
Fetch a web page? Get the size of an image? It's all
in there. It makes you so happy you could almost cry!

Of course this is not surprising since -- as most
readers probably already know -- Perl was not invented
for the sake of cgi, it just happened to be wonderful
for it because it's a so-called glue language by
design, and a very powerful (and fun) one. PHP on the
other hand was meant for this stuff from day one.

I just want to salute the people who created both of
these gems. "Great job" seems like an understatement.
