Sorry this is so late in posting. I asked the List Guides for permission
to post it and where it would be appropriate. It was approved to post in
Techniques and Languages. If you are going to JavaOne (sm) and develop for
mobile phones this may be an interesting contest.

Motorola and Nextel to Host Developer Challenge During JavaOne(SM) 2001
Date(s): 5/22/01 9:08:00 AM

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. and RESTON, Va., May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola
(NYSE: MOT) and Nextel (Nasdaq: NXTL) today announced they will
co-sponsor the Motorola/Nextel Developer Challenge. The contest
will be held June 4-6, 2001 during Sun Microsystems' annual
JavaOne(SM) developer conference in San Francisco. Developers will
compete to win a BMW Z3 2.5i roadster and Motorola i85s handsets
with Nextel service. This competition challenges developers to
create innovative local and network-aware applications using
Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) technology. Earlier
this year, Motorola and Nextel unveiled the i85s and i50sx
handsets, the first two J2ME technology-enabled wireless phones in
North America.

The Developer Challenge will take place at Metreon, adjacent to
the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and is open to developers
registered for JavaOne. Developers participating in the contest
have the opportunity to take advantage of free development tools,
including software developer kits (SDKs), integrated development
environments (IDEs), a phone emulator, and personalized on-site
technical support.

"Last year, Motorola hosted a developer contest during JavaOne,
and we were very impressed with the applications that were created
in only six hours," said Bill Werner, corporate vice president and
general manager of the iDEN Subscriber Group, Motorola, Inc. "This
year, the handsets are commercially available, so we expect to see
even more compelling applications as a result of this challenge."

Entries will be judged on overall creativity, originality,
usability, practicality, and robustness. The grand prize is a 2001
BMW Z3 2.5i roadster, as well as a pair of Motorola i85s handsets
with one year of service from Nextel. The second-place winner will
receive a pair of Motorola i85s wireless phones with one year of
service from Nextel, and a portable DVD player. The third-place
winner will receive a pair of Motorola i85s phones and one year of
service.

"Nextel's customers have been extremely receptive to the i85s
phones because business users value the ability to place new Java
applications on their phones as they become available," said Tom
Kelly, executive vice president of strategic planning and chief
marketing officer of Nextel. "We're really looking forward to
seeing the creativity that's bound to come out of this contest.
Developers can create applications for our nationwide, always- on,
IP-based packet data network, knowing that Nextel's customers,
through Java, will have improved graphical user interface,
persistent memory and the ability to run apps when in or out of
network coverage."

The competition runs from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on June 4 and 5;
and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 6. Applications must be
developed on-site and during contest hours. Seating is limited,
and is on a first-come, first served basis. Each contestant will
receive a special "survival kit" and refreshments and will be
surrounded by a relaxed atmosphere with free chair massages to
enjoy during breaks. All contestants and media are invited to the
final presentation and awards ceremony at Metreon's SoMa Room at
7:00 p.m. on June 6, during which time six finalists will be
announced and will present their applications to the judges.
