Simple JS question: date() check

Greetings,

this is the first time I write to this group... :-)

I have a basic question concerning javascript, hope you can help me.

Is there a way to automatically check a date() consistency? My page 
has a form with an input text and requires a date string like 
ddmmyyyy; I wrote a basic validation to be sure the field will not be 
left empty, but I would also like to check if 29021964 or 31042001 
are valid dates or not.
